Why join...

Below are examples of how FCTM has impacted members across the State.

When the FCTM Board pulled together as a unit, everyone met deadlines, did their respective tasks and we were able to host the Annual State Conference! Twice!  We found out that we can pull off a conference even if we all do not live in or near the location site. Charlene Kincaid

As an FCTM member, one of the highlights for me occurred when the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics jointly established its procedures with the Florida Department of Education and FCTM.  This was done under the guidance of Don Bernard who was the FCTM President at that time. Another highlight for me was FCTM raising money and starting the Kenneth Kidd Grant.  This continues to be a highlight as money is awarded yearly to Kenneth Kidd grant awardees. Renee Henry

A highlight for me as an FCTM member is sharing the proactiveness and vitality of FCTM with local councils to empower and encourage the regeneration of our local council after many dormant years. The courage (due to support of FCTM members) to apply for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Secondary Mathematics and then receiving the Presidential Award was indeed a professional highlight in my life. Cherie Rhoades

A highlight for me occurred while I was the FCTM President in 1992.  During this time, I arranged for a group of the FCTM Board members to meet with Commissioner Betty Castro to petition for students to be allowed to use calculators on the State Mathematics examinations. We then met with Dr. Tom Fisher, DOE Assessment Director, and Mark Heindorn, State Assessment Coordinator.  After the meeting, it was decided by the DOE that the new HSCT (which was given for the first time in 1994) would allow students to use a four function calculator.  Calculators, a calculator manual and a calculator use in-service module for teachers would be provided by the DOE.  As we know, a similar calculator has been provided by the DOE since then and calculators are now available for use on the FCAT mathematics tests for grades 7-10 and during retakes.  Also, the FCAT science for grades 8 and 11 will use the same calculators. Roger O’Brien

Working on the FCTM Board Conference Committees with the food and special events was a highlight for me.  I felt involved in something bigger than myself and my county.  I was reaching teachers statewide and thus students statewide.  I have worked with Joyce Hawkins, Carol Newman, Carole Halka and Charlene Kincaid as I fulfilled a need.  I met the food needs of the conference workers and I met the food and fun needs of all FCTM Conference participants.

There are so many highpoints since I have been part of FCTM.  Several of these highpoints include:

  • Getting Tom Demark to be the spokesman and lobbyist for our leadership and helping FCTM become more proactive than reactive
  • Having outstanding annual state conferences year after year
  • Recognizing outstanding teachers with Kenneth Kidd Awards, Tom Denmark Grants and Presidential Awards
  • Presenting Statewide Leadership Conference for training local chapter affiliates
  • Supporting and work with the Department of Education initiatives
  • Commitment of the FCTM Board
    • fellowship
    • helpfulness
    • dedication to service to both teachers and students.
