Carol Martin

Carol Martin is a classroom mathematics teacher. A 39 year veteran, she currently teaches algebra and geometry at Fort White High School and serves as Columbia County’s Mathematics Resource Teacher preK-12.

Carol earned a BA in Psychology from Jacksonville University (1965) and a Masters of Education (1979) from the University of Florida. During her career she has participated in many professional initiatives not only to acquire new knowledge and teaching strategies but also to establish a network of colleagues. It was the influence of these talented and dedicated people that encouraged, supported, and inspired her to continue to work and grow professionally.

Carol spent many summers at the University of Florida participating in programs for metric education, computer programming, leadership with representatives in small counties, and an honors mathematics seminar.

She shares her experiences at conferences and inservice activities in her school, district, and the state. Carol worked with the National Science Foundation funded State Systemic Initiative as a presenter in her region and a teacher representative on the state committee. She authored test items for High School Competency Test (HSCT), a unit in Algebra Opening the Gate, written articles for Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics (FCTM) Dimensions, written articles and contributed photo displays for (FETC) Florida Education Technology Conference (FETC), and activities for the magazine Florida Trends Next. Carol has participated on FCAT Item Review and Range Finder committees with Florida Department of Education. She also wrote several grants to FCTM and NCTM to fund mathematics projects.

In 1996, Carol was selected to be a member of the Florida League of Teachers and was elected Region II Director for FCTM. Other recognitions include state finalists for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Secondary Mathematics in 1997, Columbia High School Teacher of the Year in 1998, National Board Certification AYA/Math in 1999, and semifinalist for the National Teacher Hall of Fame in 2002.

Her project as Florida’s Christa McAuliffe Fellow in 2000 used video conferencing with NASA, high school students, and teachers in three rural counties. Her next project was the National Board Certification Partnership Project between Lake City Community College and local teacher's unions in Baker, Columbia, Dixie, Union, and Gilchrist county bringing interactive videoconferences to candidates and mentors. The project became a model for Broward County’s National Board Certification Program.

Carol was selected to author video exhibits for the Digital Edge Project for Apple Computer, AT&T, ISTE, and NBPTS in 2002. Her exhibits “Fill ‘Er Up” and “Gee I’m A Tree” are on the Internet.

She organized three statewide videoconferences for Florida mathematics teachers presented by Florida Mathematics Presidential Awardees Association (FMPAA). The content of each conference was the NCTM Navigations Series K-12 .

Carol has been active in many professional organizations including the Columbia County Mathematics Council (Vice President); Columbia Teachers Association (Treasurer); Florida Association of Mathematics Supervisors (Secretary, Historian); Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics, (Region II Director, Certification); National Council of Teachers of Mathematics; Florida Mathematics Presidential Awardees Association (President, Past President, Historian), and Delta Kappa Gamma.
