2005 Mathematics Educator of the Year

Karol L. Yeatts

 

 

Congratulations to Dr. Karol L. Yeatts, 2005 Kenneth P. Kidd Mathematics Educator of the Year.  Karol currently is an Associate Professor at Barry University and is serving as the interim dean for the Adrian Dominican School of Education Undergraduate Department.  Karol earned her Associates of Arts Degree from Miami Dade Community College, her Bachelors of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Florida Atlantic University, her Masters in Early Middle Childhood Education from North Texas State University, and her Doctorate in Early and Middle Childhood Education from Nova University. She has conducted research pertaining to the availability and use of mathematics manipulatives and to the use of PowerPoint for teaching elementary mathematics methods courses.

Karol has taught a range of grade levels during the past 25 years, from preschool to college.  She has received several teaching accolades including the 1994 Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching Elementary Mathematics, the 1998 Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellowships where she worked with NASA’s Educational Division in Washington, DC, and the 2004 Kappa Delta, Pi Nu Psi Chapter, Educator of the Year award.  Additionally, she has received several grants designed to help teachers enhance their mathematics instructional programs.

Karol is always looking for creative ways to teach mathematics and is truly dedicated to working with her fellow professionals and developing a variety of instructional activities that can be used to enhance students’ mathematical understanding.  She is a member of the author team for the 2005 Houghton Mifflin Mathematics Program and she has authored three instructional mathematics books for Scholastic Professional Books.

Karol’s leadership abilities have been demonstrated in her involvement with local, state, and national mathematics organizations.   She has been an active member of the Dade County Council of Teachers of Mathematics (DCCTM) for the past 20 years where she has presented numerous workshops and has served as the DCCTM Vice President of Elementary Schools.  She is currently a member of the DCCTM Board of Directors. 

Karol has been a member of the Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics (FCTM) for the past 20 years and has served as the Vice President of Elementary Schools, as President-elect, and is currently serving as the FCTM President.  She has presented numerous workshops at the FCTM Annual Conferences and she has served on Conference Program Committee for four of the FCTM Annual Conferences.  She serves as a reviewer for the FCTM journal, Dimensions.  Karol is also a member of the Florida Mathematics Presidential Awardee Association (FMPA2) and she has served as the FMPA2 President and Secretary.  She has assisted with and presented at the FMPA2 state-wide video conferences for the past four years.  Additionally, Karol has served on the steering committee for the State of Florida Mathematics and Science Summit and has been a reviewer for the Department of Education Title II grants.

Karol has been an active member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics for the past sixteen years.  She has served as a member of the NCTM Program committee for both regional and national conferences. She has presented at numerous NCTM Annual and Regional Conferences.  She has also served as a presenter for the NCTM Professional Development Academy.  She is currently a reviewer for the NCTM Journal, Teaching Children Mathematics, and is an author for the NCTM Grades 3-5 Navigations Series.

Karol is truly a teachers’ teacher.  She loves mathematics and has a passion for teaching.  She has provided countless hours of dedicated service related to enhancing mathematics education and she is very honored to be recognized as the 2005 Kenneth P. Kidd Mathematics Educator of the Year.
