Tom Denmark Teacher Enhancement GrantFCTM President Gerry Greer announced the establishment of the Tom Denmark Teacher Enhancement Fund at the October Fall Conference. Dr. Tom Denmark, a longtime active FCTM member, recognizes the importance of teacher inservice in improving mathematics education. Therefore, the FCTM Board has established four annual grants in his name. The money for this fund comes from proceeds from the 1997 FCTM Conference and the Board has chosen to use this money to encourage more participation at future conferences as a way of providing good mathematics staff development for our members. It is the Board's hope that many FCTM members will apply for these grants. Additional information and a copy of the grant application instructions follows below. Enhancement Grants for four teachers to attend the annual FCTM Conference will be awarded, one each, to a Primary (Pre-K-2) teacher, an Intermediate (3-5) teacher, a Middle School (6-8) teacher and a High School (9-12) teacher. Recipients of these awards will be notified by June 1 of their selection. They will be required to submit a report on their session and workshop experiences encountered at the annual conference along with their receipts for reimbursement, no later than November 30. The FCTM Treasurer will send a check to each recipient upon receipt of these materials. Cost: Each recipient of the grant will be reimbursed up to $500. This will help cover the cost of registration, room and transportation to attend the FCTM Annual Conference. Any additional monetary expenses over the $500 grant that are incurred by the recipient will be at their own expense. It is hoped that if additional funding is necessary the recipients may seek support from their Principal or District for the additional funds, such as, inservice dollars or other staff development sources of funding. **This money may not to be used for FCTM dues, food or substitute pay. Principal`s support for release time and substitute coverage must be acquired by applicant (see part 4 of the application process). Who May Apply:
Process: Interested teachers are invited to submit a proposal. Use separate sheets of paper (please organize as outlined below) to provide the required information. Material must be typewritten and double-spaced on 8 1/2" x 11" paper, one side only. Please do not photo reduce the pages. If more than the maximum number of pages is submitted, the extra ones will be excluded.
The principal`s letter of support must verify that release time and substitute pay will be provided for attendance at the annual FCTM Conference and that an opportunity will be provided for the recipient to share and disseminate information with others in the school and/or district about his/her experience. ******Applications must be postmarked no later than April 15th****** Send materials to: Renee

The Sunshine State Scholars Program is a new mathematics/science assessment for high school seniors throughout Florida. The format will be similar to the original PRIDE program. During the Fall Semester each school district will select a single District Scholar in mathematics and science to represent the district, however, the District Scholar must be identified by December 1. Early in January the District Scholars in each region will participate in a common assessment to identify the Regional Scholar. The regions are the six regions associated with the Area Centers for Educational Enhancement. During the first part of March the six Regional Scholars will meet in Tallahassee for the purpose of picking the Sunshine State Scholar in Mathematics and Science. Unlike the original PRIDE program where mathematics and science were evaluated separately, the regional and State assessments will now focus on a blend of mathematics and science topics. A memo from the Department of Education that describes this program and which establishes the administrative procedures will be sent to the superintendents by the middle of September. The purpose of this announcement is to allow you to begin planning as soon as possible. This program provides additional recognition for the excellent mathematics and science students in Florida. As teachers of these students we can be proud of their accomplishments. For further information contact any of the following people. |
