Tom Denmark Teacher Enhancement GrantIn the 1990's the FCTM Board established four annual grants in recognition of Dr. Tom Denmark, a long time active FCTM member. Through these grants the Board hopes to encourage participation at annual FCTM Conferences as a way to provide good mathematics professional development for FCTM members. Additional information and a copy of the grant application instructions follow. Enhancement Grants for up to four teachers to attend the annual FCTM Conference will be awarded, one each, to a Primary (Pre-K-2) teacher, an Intermediate (3-5) teacher, a Middle School (6-8) teacher and a High School (9-12) teacher. The annual application deadline is May 1. Recipients of these awards will be notified in late May of their selection. They will be required to submit a report on their session and workshop experiences encountered at the annual conference along with their receipts for reimbursement, no later than November 30. The FCTM Treasurer will send a check to each recipient upon receipt of these materials. Cost: Each recipient of the grant will be reimbursed up to $500. This will help cover the cost of registration, room and transportation to attend the FCTM Annual Conference. Any additional monetary expenses over the $500 grant that are incurred by the recipient will be at their own expense. It is hoped that if additional funding is necessary the recipients may seek support from their Principal or District for the additional funds, such as, inservice dollars or other professional development sources of funding. **This money may not to be used for FCTM dues, food or substitute pay. Each year, the Florida Department of Education Office of Mathematics and
Science sponsors Florida Math and Science Day. Florida K-12 teachers
are invited to submit lesson plans related to the selected theme. The four
grade spans for the lesson plans will be K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Within
each of these grade spans, lessons will be grouped into mathematics and
science categories. Although the integration of mathematics and science
benchmarks is encouraged, each lesson will be evaluated within either the
mathematics category or the science category. The Next Generation Sunshine
State Standards for Mathematics and Science provide the focus for the
lessons. All lesson plan submissions will be reviewed and scored by a panel
of mathematics and science educators and experts. The panel will select two
model lesson plans from each grade span, one mathematics lesson and one
science lesson. The eight writers of the winning model lessons will be
declared Florida Mathematics and Science Educators of the Day for Math and
Science Day. For each of the four winning mathematics lessons, the
Florida Council of Teachers of Mathematics will provide up to $500.00

The Sunshine State Scholars Program is a new mathematics/science assessment for high school seniors throughout Florida. The format will be similar to the original PRIDE program. During the Fall Semester each school district will select a single District Scholar in mathematics and science to represent the district, however, the District Scholar must be identified by December 1. Early in January the District Scholars in each region will participate in a common assessment to identify the Regional Scholar. The regions are the six regions associated with the Area Centers for Educational Enhancement. During the first part of March the six Regional Scholars will meet in Tallahassee for the purpose of picking the Sunshine State Scholar in Mathematics and Science. Unlike the original PRIDE program where mathematics and science were evaluated separately, the regional and State assessments will now focus on a blend of mathematics and science topics. A memo from the Department of Education that describes this program and which establishes the administrative procedures will be sent to the superintendents by the middle of September. The purpose of this announcement is to allow you to begin planning as soon as possible. This program provides additional recognition for the excellent mathematics and science students in Florida. As teachers of these students we can be proud of their accomplishments. For further information contact any of the following people. |
